How to Care for Your Shirts

A great shirt is an investment in your personal style and confidence. Whether you are wearing a breathable linen blend for a weekend getaway, a sharp fine cotton or solid dress shirt for the boardroom, or a cozy corduroy shirt for autumn layering, taking proper care of your shirts ensures they retain their fit, feel, and vibrant color for years to come.

Because different fabrics and shirt constructions require tailored care methods, we have broken down the essential care instructions by fabric and style below.

Part 1: Care by Fabric Type

    1. The Linen Blend Resort Shirts

Linen blends are prized for their lightweight breathability and effortless texture, making them a staple for casual and warm-weather wear.

    • Washing: Wash in cold water on a gentle or delicate cycle using a mild liquid detergent. Avoid using harsh bleaching agents.

    • Drying: Air drying is best. Hang on a padded or contoured hanger while damp, and gently smooth out the seams with your hands. If using a dryer, tumble dry on low heat for a few minutes and remove while still slightly damp to avoid deep wrinkles.

    • Ironing & Steaming: Embrace the natural linen texture! If you prefer a smoother look, steam while damp or iron on medium heat using a damp pressing cloth.

    2. The Executive Fine Cotton Shirts

Tailored fine cotton dress shirts demand precise care to maintain crisp collars, smooth plackets, and vibrant colors.

    • Pre-Treatment: Always remove collar stays before washing. Pre-treat the inner collar band and cuffs with a drop of liquid detergent to eliminate skin oil buildup.

    • Washing: Button down the placket, unbutton all sleeve cuffs, and wash in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle. Wash whites and darks separately.

    • Drying: Avoid high-heat tumble drying, which damages fine cotton fibers and causes shrinkage. Hang immediately after washing.

    • Ironing: Iron while the shirt is slightly damp on medium-to-high heat. Always iron the underside of the collar from the points inward toward the center to prevent edge creasing.

    3. The Heritage Flannel Shirts

Flannel is known for its brushed softness and cozy warmth, perfect for crisp autumn and winter days.

    • Washing: Turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the brushed fabric surface from pilling. Wash in cold or lukewarm water with mild detergent.

    • Drying: Air dry on a wide hanger, or tumble dry on the lowest heat setting. High heat can shrink flannel and destroy its plush texture.

    • Ironing: Flannel rarely requires ironing. If needed, steam or iron inside-out on low heat to preserve its brushed feel.

    4. The Vintage Corduroy Shirts

Corduroy features a distinctive ridged texture ("wales") that adds retro charm and visual interest to any look.

    • Washing: Always turn corduroy shirts inside out to protect the velvet-like pile from crushing during the wash. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with like colors.

    • Drying: Do not wring or twist. Hang to air dry, or tumble dry on low heat for 10 minutes to fluff the pile, then air dry.

    • Ironing & Steaming: Never iron corduroy directly on the right side, as this will permanently crush the ridges and leave shiny marks. Use a garment steamer from the inside, or iron the shirt inside-out on low heat over a soft towel.

Part 2: Special Care Guidelines by Shirt Style

    1. Solid Color Dress Shirts

Solid dress shirts (such as classic white, sharp navy, black, or subtle pastel shades) highlight clean lines and minimalist style, making any discoloration, fading, or collar stains easily noticeable.

    • Color Protection: Wash white shirts separately from colored garments. Turn dark solid shirts (e.g., navy, black) inside out and wash in cold water to prevent surface friction and color fading.

    • Pre-Treat Collar & Cuff Lines: Oils and sweat show quickly on solid collars. Pre-treat inner collars and cuffs with mild liquid detergent for 10–15 minutes before washing.

    • Avoid Local Spot Scrubbing: Avoid aggressive rubbing on small spots, as it can cause uneven color fading or fabric wear.

    2. Casual Linen & Henley Shirts

Henleys and casual linen-blend tops often feature soft knits or placket details that require gentle handling.

    • Wash in cold water on a delicate cycle, ideally inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent Henley buttons or fabric from stretching.

    • Lay flat or hang to air dry to maintain the garment's relaxed silhouette.

    3. Oxford Shirts

Oxford cloth is durable and built to last, gaining softer character with every wash.

    • Machine wash in cold or warm water with like colors.

    • Button-down collars can be ironed or left unironed for a classic, relaxed Ivy League aesthetic.

    4. Stretch Dress Shirts

Stretch fabrics incorporate elastane or spandex for enhanced comfort and mobility.

    • Avoid High Heat: Heat degrades stretch fibers. Wash in cold water and never use high-heat dryers, which destroy elasticity over time.

    • No Fabric Softeners: Fabric softeners coat performance stretch fibers and reduce their moisture-wicking properties.

    5. Patchwork Dress Shirts

Patchwork shirts blend multiple fabrics, textures, or patterns into a single garment.

    • Wash inside-out in cold water on a gentle cycle to ensure equal care across all fabric panels.

    • Air dry completely to preserve seam tension and prevent uneven shrinking between different fabric sections.

    6. Fishing & Performance Shirts

Fishing and utility shirts feature technical synthetic blends, UPF sun protection, and moisture-wicking finishes.

    • Wash in cold water without fabric softeners, bleach, or heavy detergents.

    • Air dry rapidly (performance fabrics dry very fast) or tumble dry on an air/no-heat setting. Avoid high ironing temperatures.

    Quick Care Summary Checklist

    1. Unbutton & Unload: Unbutton all buttons and remove collar stays before tossing shirts into the wash.

    2. Cold Water First: Cold water protects fine weaves, prevents shrinkage, and preserves rich solid colors.

    3. Skip High Dryers: Air drying prolongs fabric lifespan and keeps collar points crisp.

    4. Steam Over Iron: When in doubt—especially for textured fabrics like corduroy, flannel, and linen—a steamer is the safest tool in your wardrobe kit.
